Maharashtra The government’s cyber department has directed Google and Apple to remove apps of ride-hailing companies – Uber, Ola and Rapido from their respective app stores. The Office of the Additional Director General has issued these notices under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 on Friday, May 15. Both Google and Apple companies have been directed to remove these applications from their digital marketplaces and also block access to them. Let us tell you that Uber, Ola and Rapido were running bike taxis on the roads without permission without getting the necessary approval from the state government. The government has taken strict action against this behavior of ride-hailing companies.
Companies are providing services without taking approval from the government
According to a report by NDTV, the notice said, “It has been observed that some app-based platforms are running passenger transport services on a large scale through bike taxi operations without valid permission, government approval or adhering to the rules and regulations prescribed by the Transport Department and the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.” The notice also said, “It has been reported that the driver verification mechanisms, insurance coverage, women safety measures and emergency response systems are grossly inadequate. Furthermore, the rash and negligent driving associated with such bike taxi services poses a significant threat to public safety.
Apple and Google were also warned
The notice also told Apple and Google, “Since your organization has a physical presence in India and does business here, it is subject to the jurisdiction of Indian laws. Failure to comply with the instructions of Indian law enforcement agencies may result in serious legal action being taken against you. You are hereby warned that if any unlawful or disruptive event occurs due to your failure to take timely action, you will be held responsible for the same.” Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has asked the Cyber Department to take legal action by registering an FIR against these ride-hailing apps regarding the bike taxi operations running in the state.
