These days, there is a cloud of crisis over jobs in the tech sector. The beginning of the year 2026 has proved to be very scary for the IT sector employees. The situation is such that within just three months thousands of people have lost their jobs. Big tech companies are now making rapid layoffs to shrink their workforce and focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to the latest data, in the first quarter (January to March) of the year 2026 alone, 95 companies together have laid off more than 73,200 employees. The surprising thing is that the list of layoff companies includes big names like Snap, Meta, Disney and Oracle.

These companies announced layoffs

  • Snap Inc: Social media company Snap is planning to lay off 16% of its workforce i.e. about 1,000 employees. The company aims to save $500 million annually through this.
  • Meta Platforms: Facebook’s parent company Meta has eliminated about 198 more positions from its California office. Earlier in January itself, the company had laid off 1,500 people.
  • The Walt Disney Company: Disney is set to furlough about 1,000 employees following new leadership. The company is reorganizing its operations.
  • Oracle Corporation: The biggest blow may come from Oracle. According to media reports, the company is planning to lay off 20 to 30 thousand employees worldwide.

It will have a huge impact on India

Oracle’s layoffs are likely to have the biggest impact on India. It is estimated that around 12,000 employees in India may be affected by this. The divisions affected mainly include cloud, healthcare and sales. However, the company is talking about providing severance package and insurance benefits to the affected employees.

Why are so many layoffs happening?

Experts believe that companies had done too much hiring during the Corona period. Now companies want to reduce their costs. The second biggest reason is the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Companies are now investing heavily in AI infrastructure in place of humans, eliminating the need for many positions.
