Since the launch of 5G service, telecom companies have been offering free unlimited 5G data to the users. Most telecom companies offer unlimited data to prepaid users on recharge plans with 2GB daily data or more. At the same time, all postpaid users get its benefit. Recently an analyst has advised telecom companies to stop providing unlimited 5G data for free.
Unlimited 5G offer should be stopped
Market analyst Motilal Oswal believes that Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea should now stop giving free unlimited 5G data to the users. According to analysts, companies should start earning money by using more data on the network. According to recent reports, almost all telecom companies offer unlimited 5G data to prepaid users in plans with daily 2GB data. Even after this, users are buying top-up vouchers to meet the data requirement.
Data traffic increased rapidly
According to the report, in the financial year 2025-26, the data traffic of the three private telecom companies of the country has increased by 29% as compared to the previous financial year. People are consuming more and more data. There was an increase of about 21.5 percent in data traffic in the last financial year. It has been claimed in this report that this year an increase in data consumption has been seen in all telecom companies. However, Jio is at the forefront in this matter. The company’s data consumption has increased by 31% annually.
At the same time, Airtel’s data consumption has also seen an increase of 28% annually, while Vi’s data consumption has increased by 23%. If we look at the average data consumption per subscriber, the consumption has reached 34.1GB in the financial year 2025-26 as compared to 27.3GB data in the financial year 2024-25.
Making recharge plan expensive is not enough
The market research company believes that companies are making recharge plans expensive to increase their average revenue per user (ARPU). It is not enough to just make the plans expensive, companies also need to change the data prices and plans to earn more profits. Especially free unlimited data should be stopped completely. Changes in tariff structure may increase the growth of telecom companies.
