Australia has suffered a big setback before the start of the Test series against South Africa. The team’s star all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the first Test match to be held in Durban due to injury. Green suffered an abdominal injury during the third ODI against South Africa.
Green suffered the injury during the third ODI played in Potchefstroom. He came out to bowl only three balls against Corbin Bosch in that match. During this, a ball hit his stomach, after which he hit a six and then dismissed the batsman. After this, in the examination he was confirmed to have strain in the stomach muscles.
Green may be missed
According to the report of ESPNCricinfo, Australia’s medical staff is hopeful that Green can be fit to play in the Test series to be held in Gkebarha or Cape Town. Even if he returns in the next match of the series, he will not be used as a bowler. Green’s absence is also a big blow for Australia because in recent times he has been one of the team’s reliable players with the bat. He was Australia’s leading run-scorer in the Test series against Bangladesh in August. Apart from this, after batting at different numbers during the last Ashes series, he had strengthened his place at number-5.
McDonald also praised the change in Green’s batting. He said that Green made a great comeback after the last domestic season and this also boosted his confidence. Australia has not yet decided who will replace Green in the playing eleven. However, Cooper Connolly and recently recalled Nick Maddinson are being considered as options in this race. Maddinson has been recalled to the team because of his batting ability against spin.
Travis Head will start the innings!
Spin bowling can also play an important role in the series against South Africa. The hosts may field Simon Harmer along with Keshav Maharaj. The Australian team hopes that the impact of spin bowlers will be seen at some point in the match, although whether it will be from the beginning of the match or later when the conditions change, the picture regarding this is not clear yet. McDonald also indicated that Travis Head is likely to open the innings, although final discussions regarding the batting order are still pending.
