New Delhi: At present, Delhi High Court has refused to accept the demand to shift social activist Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to private hospital Medanta. The court clarified that Sonam Wangchuk’s treatment will continue in Safdarjung Hospital for the time being. Sonam Wangchuk’s family members have been allowed to meet her. The court has directed to provide a separate rest room in Safdarjung Hospital for his family members. The court has issued notice to the Central Government, Delhi Government and Delhi Police and directed them to file a status report in this matter within three days. The next hearing of this case will be on July 24.
Gitanjali Angmo did not get interim relief
During the hearing, the court said that considering the health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, the decision to admit her to the hospital was taken completely within the ambit of the law. The court also refused to pass any interim order in this case. At the same time, no interim relief has been given on the demand of Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Angmo to be shifted to private hospital Medanta. After this decision of the High Court, for the time being Sonam Wangchuk’s treatment will continue in Safdarjung Hospital only.
Every life is precious – High Court
The High Court said during the hearing that every life is precious and patient care is the top priority. The court also took cognizance of the arguments of the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) and doctors that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife and her brother have been allowed to stay with him 24 hours. The court said that it is clear from the records that Wangchuk’s family has also been given a separate room in the hospital, due to which they are able to spend time with him. Apart from this, the court directed that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife and other people present with her should be given the facility of separate rest room in the hospital and they should be ensured full access to meet Wangchuk. Now the next hearing of this case will be on July 24 after the status report of the Central Government and the concerned authorities comes.
Permission was sought for treatment in private hospital
Sonam’s wife said that she no longer has faith in Safdarjung Hospital and she wants to admit Wangchuk to a private hospital of her choice before his health deteriorates further. In his petition filed in the High Court, he said that despite repeated requests, the Safdarjung Hospital administration provided him ‘only selected information’. He said Wangchuk’s health was not being independently verified as he was not allowed to be taken to any other hospital. Expressed deep concern about her husband’s health and said that when Wangchuk was removed from the protest site, all his vital health parameters were stable. Despite this, the process of his treatment was carried out in a secret and completely opaque manner, due to which he is distressed.
Admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday
Wangchuk sat on an indefinite hunger strike on June 28 in support of the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar against alleged irregularities in the NEET exam. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the 21st day of his hunger strike, Delhi Police forcibly picked him up from Jantar Mantar and took him to Safdarjung Hospital and admitted him. The protesters present at Jantar Mantar protested against forcibly admitting Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital.
