Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has announced a big increase in the salary of the employees working at the liquor shops of the state government. Vijay government has increased the salary of TASMAC employees by 25 percent. The government says the move is aimed at curbing corruption and preventing consumers from overcharging for liquor bottles.

Giving information about this decision of the state government, Minister Vignesh said that the increase in salary will ensure that the employees will no longer charge customers more than the fixed price. The government believes that better salaries will reduce corruption and increase accountability in TASMAC shops. Vignesh also said that such an increase in the salaries of TASMAC employees had not been made in the last 20 years. The new salary structure is expected to improve the welfare of employees and resolve old complaints of overcharging.
4,765 TASMAC shops in Tamil Nadu
The announcement comes months after Chief Minister Joseph Vijay ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops operating within 500 meters of places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands. According to the government, there are 4,765 TASMAC shops in Tamil Nadu, of which 717 were selected for closure. These include 276 shops near places of worship, 186 near educational institutions and 255 near bus stands. The government had presented the move to close these shops as a social reform measure to reduce the easy availability of liquor in sensitive public places.
