If you are preparing to get Driving License (DL) in Maharashtra, then this news is very important for you. The state government is going to make major changes in the rules for issuing driving licenses from August 1, 2026. Under the new rule, now driving license will not be issued without domicile certificate. The government says that the purpose of this decision is to make the licensing process more transparent and systematic.
Now domicile certificate will be mandatory
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik told the Assembly that the proposal for new rules has been sent to the Law and Justice Department for approval. It will be implemented as soon as approval is received. From August 1, people applying for driving license will have to submit the domicile certificate along with other required documents. The government believes that this will stop the cases of getting licenses through fake documents and only eligible people will be able to get the driving license.
New rules will come for bike taxi also
The government is preparing to bring not only driving license but also bike taxi services under legal ambit. Under the proposed policy, bike taxi operators will have to pay a fee of Rs 5 per day to the government. Apart from this, Rs 2 on every ride will be deposited in the Driver Welfare Fund. Valid driving license, public service vehicle badge and police character verification will also be made mandatory for bike taxi drivers. The government says that these rules will improve the safety of passengers, especially women and students.
Action will continue against illegal bike taxis
The government has made it clear that carrying passengers on a private two-wheeler without permission is against the rules and strict action will continue in such cases. In the last one year, the transport department has taken action against hundreds of illegal bike taxis. Many vehicles were seized, fines worth lakhs of rupees were collected and FIRs were also registered in many cases. The government says the new policy aims to bring bike taxi services into the legal framework, increase safety of passengers, create employment opportunities for youth and increase state revenue.
