New Delhi: The central government on Thursday appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the new director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the country’s premier internal intelligence agency. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved this high-profile appointment. Mahesh Dixit will replace current IB chief Tapan Kumar Deka.
Got responsibility for two years
Mahesh Dixit, a 1993 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders. According to the official order, Mahesh Dixit, currently posted as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, has also been given extension of service under special provisions of All India Services (AIS) rules and Financial Rules (FR) to give him a tenure of 2 years as IB Director. He will take over this responsibility in place of outgoing chief Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS) of 1993 batch of Himachal Pradesh cadre.

Mahesh Dixit is counted among the most experienced and capable officers of Indian intelligence and internal security operations. A large and important part of his career has been spent in Jammu and Kashmir. He served as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of the IB in Srinagar. After the removal of Article 370 in the year 2019, his role was very important in maintaining security in the valley and taking command of intelligence operations.
Extensive experience in counter-terrorism
Dixit has extensive experience in counter-terrorism. He has led several sensitive operations in dismantling Pakistan sponsored infiltration networks, curbing anti-national radicalism and strengthening intelligence networks. Apart from this, he has also handled many important responsibilities within the IB on the fronts related to Left Wing Extremism (Naxalism), which is a major challenge for the country. His appointment has come at a time when the internal security challenges facing the country are constantly changing and taking new forms. This ground experience of Mahesh Dixit will prove helpful in making the internal security of the country more impenetrable.
