New Delhi: The Central Government has extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood by one year. The tenure of Sood, a 1986 batch Karnataka cadre IPS officer, has been extended for one more year till May 13, 2026. Now he will remain on this post till 12 May 2027. He assumed office on May 25, 2023, for two years. Praveen Sood was given an extension of one year on 24 May 2025 i.e. last year also.
According to the information, the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet (ACC) approved it on the basis of the recommendations of the selection committee. The ACC order states that Sood’s tenure has been extended for one year beyond May 24, 2026.
Meeting to decide on appointment of CBI director
Earlier on Tuesday (May 12, 2026), a high-level committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met to decide on the appointment of the next CBI director. During the meeting, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi moved a dissent note in which he accused the government of cornering the agency to target political opponents, journalists and critics. This panel headed by the Prime Minister also includes Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg and lasted for more than an hour. The one-year extension of service of the current CBI director was to end on May 24, 2026.
Rahul Gandhi targeted the government
Rahul Gandhi shared his dissent note on his X handle. He said, “Your government has repeatedly misused the CBI to target political opponents, journalists and critics. It is to prevent such institutional capture that the Leader of the Opposition is included in the selection committee. Sadly, you have consistently deprived me of playing any meaningful role in this process.
