There was a twist in the electoral atmosphere of West Bengal when a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court demanding the immediate removal of the famous IPS Ajay Pal Sharma of UP cadre from the post of Police Observer. Let us tell you that the petitioner filed this application late on Tuesday night, in which he cited Article 32 of the Constitution and demanded to protect the right to fair and free elections.
IPS Ajay Pal accused of not being impartial
In the PIL filed in the Supreme Court, it was alleged that IPS Ajay Pal Sharma did not maintain the expected impartiality as an observer of the Election Commission. It is claimed that after being posted in South 24 Parganas, Ajay Pal Sharma allegedly targeted and intimidated the candidates of political parties. Also, took part in activities like exerting undue influence.
Petition talks about level playing field being affected
In this petition it was said that the presence of Ajay Pal Sharma is affecting the election environment in West Bengal. Due to this, questions are being raised on the fairness of Bengal Assembly elections 2026. It is also alleged that such conduct affects the level playing field in elections, which is the basic foundation of the democratic process.
The petition cited the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Citing the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the petition said that election observers are appointed in the election state to ensure adherence to democratic standards and independent monitoring. But in such a situation, if any observer deviates from his responsibility, it weakens the public confidence in the entire electoral system.
In his petition, the petitioner has urged the Supreme Court to take cognizance of the matter and issue necessary instructions. Besides, an appeal has also been made to ensure fairness of the ongoing electoral process in West Bengal.
