These days, preparations are going on in Indian cinema to present mythological stories in a new style on the big screen. In this series, there is tremendous curiosity among the audience about director Nitish Tiwari’s film ‘Ramayana’. Starring stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol, this film is going to present the saga of Lord Ram in a grand cinematic form. But the discussion is not limited to ‘Ramayana’ only. Amidst the possibilities of further expanding the world of the film, interest has also increased in the plan to make separate films on important characters like Hanuman, Jatayu, Shurpanakha, Indrajit and Angad. If spin-off films are made on these characters, then many such stories from the world of Ramayana can come to light, which have not been shown in detail on screen till now.

After ‘Ramayana’ the way for spin off films may open.

The trend of spin offs is continuously increasing in the world of films. In this, a different story is shown by keeping a popular character of a big film at the centre. This gives the audience a chance to know the character’s past, struggles, powers and untouched aspects of his life. In a huge epic like ‘Ramayana’, there are many characters who have their own distinct identity and important role. From Hanuman’s devotion and bravery to Jatayu’s sacrifice, from the story of Shurpanakha to Indrajit’s warfare and Angad’s diplomacy, each story has a different cinematic potential. However, official confirmation regarding the planning and production of these five spin-off films is yet to be revealed.

Hanuman

The character of Hanuman, a great devotee of Lord Rama, is among the most popular characters of Ramayana. His extraordinary strength, intelligence, loyalty and dedication establish him as a great hero in his own right. Episodes like crossing the ocean in search of Mother Sita, entering Lanka and bringing Sanjivani Booti can give an exciting cinematic experience to the audience. In the film focusing on the life and powers of Hanuman, one can see a big world of action and emotions along with devotion.

Jatayu

The incident of Jatayu in Ramayana may be for a limited period of time, but its emotional significance is huge. When Ravana is abducting Mother Sita and taking her to Lanka, Jatayu tries to stop him. Despite being old, he fights Ravana and gets seriously injured. The story of Jatayu gives the message of courage, duty and standing against injustice. A film based on this character can show his life, struggle and that decisive battle in detail.

Shurpanakha

The character of Shurpanakha plays an important role in taking forward the events of Ramayana. His encounter with Ram and Lakshman in Panchavati, his humiliation and the events that followed have a deep connection with the story of Sita’s abduction and the Ram-Ravana war. A film focusing on Shurpanakha can present a new perspective on her personality, desires, anger and her relationship with the Lankan royal family. However, in such a story it would be important to keep in mind the context of the original epic and the descriptions present in different traditions.

Indrajeet

Ravana’s son Indrajit, also known as Meghnad, is counted among the major warriors of Ramayana. His strategy in battle, illusionary powers and fighting skills make him an impressive character. Through the story of Indrajit, the decisive conflict with the military side of Lanka, Ravana’s family and Ram’s army can be shown. This character can also be interesting for filmmakers in terms of big action and war scenes.

Angad

Angad was the son of monkey king Bali and nephew of Sugriva. His character in Ramayana is not only that of a warrior but also that of a skilled messenger. Reaching Ravana’s court before the war with Ram’s message and showing his fearlessness there is an important part of his personality. Aspects like family legacy, loyalty, courage and diplomacy can be expanded upon in Angad’s story.

The world of Ramayana may get a new expansion

If the plan to make separate films on these five characters goes ahead, then the world of ‘Ramayana’ may not be limited to one film but may take the form of a big cinematic universe. This will give the audience an opportunity to see the familiar themes of the epic from a new perspective. At present, the official announcement regarding the proposed spin-off films on Hanuman, Jatayu, Shurpanakha, Indrajit and Angad will be awaited. In such a situation, there is enthusiasm about these stories, but before considering them as firm film plans, confirmation from the producers is necessary.
