Veteran journalist and author S Hussain Zaidi released his new book ‘Mafia Queens of India’ in Mumbai. On this occasion, eminent personalities from the world of cinema and literature gathered to discuss crime, power and the stories of women who made their mark in the underworld. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, director Vishal Bhardwaj, actor Jaideep Ahlawat, actress Kirti Kulhari and co-writer Velli Thevar were present at the event. The discussion explored how crime stories are changing and why women-led stories are gaining attention.
What did the writer say about the book?
Speaking to ANI, Zaidi said that the idea of writing the book came after readers told him that mafia queens are not limited to Mumbai only. He said, ‘People started telling me that mafia queens are not found only in Mumbai. Throughout India, a mafia queen can be found in almost every state. So, I thought I would choose the most dangerous, most cunning and most cunning women.’ He further said that ‘I have chosen 10 such stories for my book ‘Mafia Queens of India’. My co-author Veli supported me a lot in writing this book. It is very difficult for me to say which is my favorite story. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said that stories of women involved in the mafia offer a new perspective, as crime stories often focus on men.

Director Ram Gopal Varma also said on this occasion, ‘I think people generally focus on men only. When you hear the word ‘mafia’, you rarely think of women. I think this in itself is a big aspect. Given his experience as a crime journalist and the research he has done, reading these stories will be a completely new experience.’ Director Vishal Bhardwaj said that mafia stories are spread all over India and not just in Mumbai. He told ANI, ‘I think the scope has increased because the mafia and the underworld are not limited to Mumbai only. The mafia in Mumbai is presented in a very glamorous manner, but mafia networks exist all over India. For example, the mafia of Uttar Pradesh is quite interesting. North India has its own stories. I have read one or two stories from the research that Hussain has done, they are very good. The female characters are amazing. I think many films will be made on this.
