Mumbai: Tata Trust is working towards creating a network of 40 to 50 non-profit general hospitals across the country. In this model, the money received from patients who can afford the treatment will be used to help treat those who cannot afford the treatment. Tata Trust Chairman Noel Tata gave this information in the annual report for the financial year 2025-26. He said that the aim of the organization is not just to spend money, but to create such institutions which will be useful to the society in the long run.

‘Now not just the expenditure, the effect of the work will also have to be shown’

Noel Tata said in his message that it is no longer enough to ask how much money the Trust spent or how much it contributed. He said,

‘The organization will also have to explain what change its work has brought about in people’s lives and how long that change will last. Social service should not be evaluated only on the basis of how many people were helped or how much money was spent. It is also important to see whether the help has brought real and long-lasting benefits or not.

Target to reach 25 lakh people in five years

Tata Trust has prepared a five-year health plan for 2026 to 2031. Under this, a target has been set to provide health services to 25 lakh people in about 75 blocks and strengthen more than 100 government health centres. Noel Tata said that the organization will continue to help those families who face financial crisis due to serious illness. Along with this, decentralized cancer care system will be expanded to bring cancer treatment facilities closer to people’s homes.

How much help did it provide in the treatment of cancer patients?

According to Tata Trust’s annual report, 1,06,626 patients took consultation in OPD under its cancer care programs in the financial year 2025-26. During this period, 24,874 cycles of chemotherapy were completed and 2,879 surgeries were performed to treat patients. The aim of the organization is to make the treatment of serious diseases like cancer more accessible to patients, so that they do not have to go far from their homes for treatment and to provide assistance to needy families.

Better institutions will be built in India for talented youth.

Noel Tata said that many talented youth of India go abroad in search of opportunities which they cannot get in their country. According to him, India needs more such institutions, which hone the talent of the youth and give them opportunities to move forward. He said that Tata Trust has played a role in developing institutions of national importance in the past and will continue to do so in future also. If needed, partnerships can also be formed with other charitable organizations and like-minded organizations.

Example given by IISc, TIFR and Tata Memorial Hospital

Referring to the tradition of building institutes, Noel Tata gave the examples of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Tata Memorial Hospital. He said that the construction of these institutions reflects the thinking that such institutions should be created for the society, which can fulfill the needs of the people in the long run. Tata Trust will focus on promoting similar institutions in the future and creating better opportunities for talented people in the country.

Trust has major stake in Tata Group

Tata Trust holds a total of 66 percent stake in Tata Sons. Tata Sons is the holding company under whose control many big listed companies of the Tata Group come. Noel Tata took over the responsibility of chairman of the trust after Ratan Tata. Under his leadership the organization is carrying forward its work in areas such as health services, education and development of institutions of national importance.

‘Need for increasing accountability in social service’

Noel Tata said that the field of social service is changing in India. The new generation of entrepreneurs is becoming more ambitious towards social work. In such a situation, old and established institutions will also have to increase the level of effectiveness and accountability of their work. He cautioned that one should focus on being the best before trying to be the biggest, as a race to simply increase size often does not yield good results. (With inputs from PTI)
