Air India and Air India Express have increased fuel surcharge for domestic and international flights. According to the airlines, the increased surcharge will be applicable from October 9. At the same time, Akasa Air has decided to re-impose fuel surcharge on domestic flights, while increasing the surcharge for international flights. The revised rates of Akasa Air will also be applicable from October 9.
The new rates will be applicable for new bookings made from 12 am on October 9 for Air India Express and from 11 am on October 9 for Air India. In a statement, Air India said aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have witnessed significant volatility in recent months, primarily due to geopolitical developments and persistent pressure on global energy markets. “The recent increase in fuel prices has further increased the operating costs of airlines, while fuel remains a significant share of an airline’s total expenses,” the statement said.
Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) accounts for about 40 percent of an airline’s operating costs. The revised fuel surcharge for domestic flights ranges between Rs 400 to Rs 1,200, depending on the distance. Meanwhile, fuel surcharge for international flights ranges between 55 USD to 215 USD depending on the region and country. The change in fuel surcharge comes days after the country’s largest airline, IndiGo, increased its surcharge.
Surcharge based on distance on domestic flights
- 0 to 500 km: Rs 400
- 501 to 1,000 km: Rs 600
- 1,001 to 1,500 km: Rs 850
- 1,501 to 2,000 km: Rs 1,200
- More than 2,000 km: Rs 1,200
Akasa Air again imposes surcharge on domestic flights
Akasa Air has re-introduced fuel surcharge for domestic flights and has decided to increase the surcharge on international services from October 9. The move comes at a time when fluctuations and increases in jet fuel prices in recent months have put pressure on airlines’ operating costs.
Airlines’ costs increased due to ATF becoming expensive
Jet fuel constitutes a large portion of the total operating expenses of airlines. ATF prices have fluctuated due to global energy market pressures and geopolitical developments. To mitigate the impact of increase in fuel costs, airlines are recovering some part of the additional cost from passengers through fuel surcharge.
Surcharge will be reviewed from time to time
Air India and Air India Express have said that the fuel surcharge will be reviewed from time to time and may be amended appropriately as per changes in cost. At the same time, Akasa Air’s decision to increase surcharge on international services will be effective from October 9.
