Big relief for crores of SBI customers, nationwide strike on 25th and 26th May postponed

Indian There is relief news for State Bank (SBI) customers. The proposed nationwide strike of employees on 25-26 May has been postponed. This decision has been taken after ‘positive talks’ held on Friday between the bank management and representatives of employee unions. SBI said that after the strike is averted, its branches will remain open normally on May 25 and 26 and all banking services will continue. In an advisory issued to its 52 crore customers, the bank said that the strike proposed by All India SBI Employees Federation (AISBISF) on May 25-26 has been postponed.

A strike was called for 2 days

AISBISF had called for a two-day nationwide strike to press for various demands including recruitment of adequate staff. Sudip Dutta, Secretary, SBI Staff Association, Bengal Circle, said, “The meeting held in Mumbai with the management was positive and progress has been made on several demands of the employees federation. In these circumstances, the proposed strike has been postponed.” Earlier this month, the employees federation had called for a nationwide strike with 16-point demands. These demands included recruitment of messengers and armed guards, deployment of adequate staff, stopping outsourcing in permanent jobs, review of career progression schemes, improvement in medical reimbursement and resolution of HRMS related issues.

What are the demands of the employees?

The employees federation had also expressed concern over the decline in recruitment of clerks within the bank, increasing workload on employees, delay in inter-circle transfers and pension related issues. General Secretary of SBI Employees Federation L. Chandrashekhar said in a message to his members, “The meeting held between the bank management and the federation at the Corporate Center in Mumbai was positive. We are happy to say that positive progress has been made on our demands. In view of the progress made during the discussions, the proposed strike has been postponed.”

Big relief for SBI customers

This decision has brought great relief to crores of customers of the bank because if there was a strike, the banking operations of SBI would have been affected for 5 days. The fourth Saturday and Sunday falling before the proposed strike. Apart from this, May 27 is also a holiday in many states due to Eid al-Adha.
