Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi made a post on social media platform X on Tuesday. In this post he has written “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”. Along with this, he has shared a picture, which looks like ‘Tripundha Tilak’ associated with Lord Shiva. Rahul Gandhi’s post comes at a time when the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear petitions on Tuesday challenging the decisions taken by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission of India (ECI) during the SIR (Special Revision) of the voter list.

Hearing in Supreme Court today

Just a day before this, the Election Commission had defended its decision-making process before the Supreme Court. The Commission rejected allegations that Gyanesh Kumar had taken unilateral steps in decisions related to the SIR process. The Commission clarified that the three orders related to the amendment were unanimous decisions of its three members. Rahul Gandhi’s post contains a graphic consisting of three white lines on a black background, intersected by a red vertical line. The design resembles the ‘Tripundha Tilak’ associated with Lord Shiva. According to scholar Antonio Rigopoulos, ‘Tripundha’ is a symbol of Shaiva tradition, in which three horizontal lines of ash are drawn on the forehead. These lines represent the three powers of will, knowledge and action of Lord Shiva.

Rahul Gandhi marched towards the Supreme Court

This post of Rahul Gandhi has come in the background of increasing conflict between the Congress leader and the Election Commission. He has repeatedly raised questions on the functioning of the Election Commission and accused it of promoting irregularities in the electoral process. However, his allegations have been denied by the Election Commission. On 11 October, Rahul Gandhi announced a march towards the Supreme Court. He appealed to opposition parties, civil society groups and ordinary citizens to join the protest against alleged “vote theft”. He said the protesters would submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India, demanding a halt to the SIR process and Kumar’s resignation.

‘Shiv Tandav’ was also mentioned in the demonstration

Rahul Gandhi had compared the protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to the “Tandav of Lord Shiva”. He said that there is no need for any formal plan for this movement. He said that this protest is not dependent on any fixed plan, but will continue in different forms. He said, “The plan was that we would go by bus, sit there and get arrested. But the police did not let us go, so we changed the plan. Did the result happen with a plan, or without a plan? There is no need for any plan. This dance (Tandava) is going on. This is the dance of Lord Shiva. Anyone can join Shiva’s procession. Anyone who wants to join can come.” (With ANI inputs)
