The death toll due to Shigella is increasing in Kerala. The Kerala Health Department on Monday confirmed two more deaths due to Shigella infection, taking the total number of deaths due to the disease in the state to five. The Health Department of Kerala is taking special care of the sick people suffering from Shigella.

Was admitted to the hospital on June 12

According to officials, 7-year-old Arjav, a resident of Pookkottur in Malappuram district, died during treatment at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital on Monday. According to officials, Arjav was admitted to the hospital on June 12 after complaining of fever and diarrhea, where he was later confirmed to have Shigella infection.

71 new cases came only in June

The health department also confirmed that the death of a 43-year-old man from Kodakara in Thrissur district on June 13 was also due to the infection. According to Directorate of Health Services data, 8 new cases of Shigella were reported from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur and Kozhikode districts on Monday. The total number of Shigella cases in the state this year has increased to 147, of which 71 cases were reported in June.

What is Shigella infection?

Shigella bacteria cause an intestinal infection called shigellosis. This causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. It is spread mainly through contaminated food, unsafe water and close contact with infected persons. Although this infection is often mild, it can become serious in weakened patients or those with existing health problems.

Health Tips and Precautions

Following the recent deaths, health officials have increased surveillance in several districts including Malappuram. People have been urged to follow strict hygiene, consume safe drinking water and immediately seek medical advice if symptoms like fever, diarrhea, vomiting or blood in stool appear.
