South cinema’s veteran actor-director K Bhagyaraj has passed away. Bhagyaraj is a filmmaker who has had an illustrious career spanning nearly five decades and has earned widespread praise for his contributions to Tamil cinema. He died after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 73 years old. Interestingly, Bhagyaraj first started with a small cameo role as a junior artiste in Bharathiraja’s debut film, 16 Vayathinile (1977) and then appeared briefly in the director’s Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), where he also wrote the dialogues for it.
He worked as an assistant director to the late filmmaker on 16 Vayathinile and Kizhakke Pogum Rail (1978) and also wrote the screenplay for Tik Tik Tik (1981) apart from this. Later, Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilaadha Chithirangal (1979), in which he starred alongside Sudhakar and Sumathi. His best films include Suvariladha Chithirangal (1979), Oru Kai Osai (1980), Mouna Geethangal (1981), Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Darling, Darling, Darling (1982), Mundnai Mudichu (1983), Dhavani Kanavugal (1984), Chinna Veedu (1985), Enga Chinna Rasa. (1987) and Avasara Police 100 (1990).
His films were made in other languages also
Many of K Bhagyaraj’s films were remade in Telugu and Hindi. He crossed the boundaries of language when it was not common to do so. Apart from films, he edited the weekly Tamil magazine ‘Bhagya’ and also wrote several novels. In later years, he returned to acting in important supporting roles. Recently he was seen in Dhanush’s film ‘Kubera’ (2025). During his golden jubilee celebrations in January 2026, when Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were also present in the audience, he announced that he would be directing again — a film and perhaps a web series. Tamil cinema was waiting for this. He is survived by his son (actor Shantanu Bhagyaraj), daughter (Saranya) and wife (Poornima). Now the news of Bhagyaraj’s demise has spread a wave of mourning in the entire film industry.
