Actually, the Model Code of Conduct is currently in force in these states and union territories due to the assembly elections, keeping this decision in mind.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had said in February that it is considering completely stopping cash transactions for payment of toll on national highways from April 1, 2026. These changes will improve lane efficiency at toll plazas and help in ‘Ease of Travel’ for National Highway users by reducing congestion and bringing more consistency and transparency in toll transactions. In the last few years, Fastag has been used more than 98 percent in toll collection. UPI facility has already been started for toll collection on the National Highway. Additionally, faster and easier digital payment options have become available for toll collection.
Double toll tax was charged on payment by cash.
Let us tell you that according to the National Highway Toll rules, if your vehicle does not have a valid and active Fastag and you pay the toll in cash, then you had to pay double the toll tax. Additionally, if you pay toll through UPI, you will have to pay 1.25 times the applicable toll. Whereas, in making payment through Fastag, no additional payment has to be made. These initiatives of the government collectively advance the objective of reducing dependence on cash transactions and digitalizing the toll system.
