The Board of Control for Cricket in India is looking for a new selector after one post in the selection committee became vacant after the completion of the tenure of Ajit Agarkar who was holding the position of chief selector. Currently, after Agarkar’s departure, Pragyan Ojha, being the senior among the remaining selectors, is holding the post of Chief Selector on an interim basis and it is expected that he will hold the same post full time in the future as well, but now the possibility of this seems very less. The main reason behind this is the application of former Team India player Wasim Jaffer, who has played a total of 31 matches in Tests, for the post of chief selector.
Wasim Jaffer confirmed about the application
Team India’s former opening batsman Wasim Jaffer has applied for the vacant post of chief selector of the Indian cricket team. Wasim Jaffer has confirmed in a statement given to news agency PTI that yes, I have applied for this post. Wasim Jaffer, who is currently 48 years old, has played 31 test matches for Team India and has managed to score around 2000 runs in them. If the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape selects Wasim Jaffer, he will have the record of playing the most Test matches among the candidates being considered for the post of chairman. Jaffer has played 31 Tests which is more than Pragyan Ojha who played 24 Tests for India. Under the current selection process, the representative of the region who has played the most Test matches is considered a contender to become the chairman of the selection committee.
BCCI in favor of making Pragyan Ojha the chief selector
Even though the race to become the chief selector of Team India is looking quite exciting after Wasim Jaffer’s application, it is believed that there is strong support within the BCCI to retain Pragyan Ojha as the president because Jaffer’s arrival may impact the formation of the new selection committee. In such a situation, Team India’s former spin bowler Ramesh Powar can also join the race to get a place in the selection committee. He can represent from the West Zone in which Powar has played 2 matches for Team India in Test cricket.
