
The domestic stock market closed with gains for the second consecutive session on Tuesday. The Sensex closed 173.81 points or 0.21% higher at 83,450.96, while the Nifty 50 closed 42.65 points or 0.17% higher at 25,725.40. The gains were massive, as the BSE 150 Midcap index rose 0.31%, while the BSE 250 Smallcap index jumped 0.86%. The market was also supported by some big stocks like ITC, BEL and Infosys. Rupee increased by 5 paise and closed at 90.69
On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated by 5 paise to close at 90.69 (provisional) against the US dollar, supported by positivity in the domestic equity market and lower crude oil prices overseas. However, continued foreign fund outflows and strengthening of the US currency put pressure on the Indian currency and capped its gains, forex traders said.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 90.72 against the US dollar and traded in a tight range, touching a high of 90.64 and low of 90.78 in intraday deals. The unit finally closed the session at 90.69 (provisional) against the greenback, registering a rise of 5 paise from its previous closing level. On Monday, the rupee had fallen 8 paise to close at 90.74 against the US dollar.
