Today is 14th January and the festival of Makar Sankranti is being celebrated with great pomp across the country. The sky full of kites, the sweetness of sesame and jaggery and the joy of the festival… Amidst all this, if you are preparing to complete any important work related to the bank, then before leaving the house, it is very important to know whether the banks are open or closed in your state today. Like every year, this time too there is confusion in the minds of people regarding the bank holiday on Makar Sankranti.
According to the official list of bank holidays for January 2026 released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks are not closed simultaneously across the country on January 14. That is, the bank holiday on the day of Makar Sankranti varies according to the states. In such a situation, reaching the bank without any information can put you in unnecessary trouble.
Banks will remain closed in these states today
According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks will remain closed in Gujarat, Odisha, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh today, January 14. In these states, due to Makar Sankranti and local festivals related to it, there will be no counter related work in bank branches. If you need to deposit a cheque, get a draft made or need any other branch visit, you will have to wait for the next working day.
Work will remain normal in other states
Except these four states, banks in other parts of the country will remain open normally today. This means that in most of the states of North India, Central India and South India, customers can complete their daily bank related tasks without any interruption.
Digital banking services will remain operational
It is also a matter of relief that even in the states where banks are closed today, digital banking services will remain fully operational. Facilities like UPI, net banking, mobile banking, ATM, online transaction, bill payment and fund transfer will be available as usual. In such a situation, there will be no need to go to the bank branch to withdraw cash or send money.
