Tesla, whose name was once considered synonymous in the electric vehicle (EV) market, is now being questioned about its dominance. In the year 2025, Chinese car manufacturer BYD has performed such a feat which shocked the entire auto industry. The crown of the world’s largest electric car company has now been snatched away from Elon Musk’s Tesla and China’s BYD has achieved this feat, that too by selling more than 22 lakh electric cars in a year.

According to the data, BYD sold 22.6 lakh battery electric cars in 2025, while Tesla’s deliveries were limited to 16.3 lakh units. This is not just a numbers game, but an indication of the changing power center in the global EV market. Chinese companies are now moving rapidly towards establishing their dominance in the global auto sector through electric mobility.

Tesla’s troubles

The year 2025 was challenging for Tesla on many fronts. End of EV subsidy in America, relaxation in emission norms and anti-EV policies of Donald Trump had a direct impact on the company’s sales. Apart from this, there was also resentment among a section of consumers regarding the political stance of Elon Musk. The result was that Tesla’s deliveries in the last quarter of the year were much lower than expected and sales for the whole year declined by 9 percent.

BYD’s fast pace

On the other hand, BYD showed strength even in adverse circumstances. Despite a slight slowdown in December, the company’s electric car sales grew by 28 percent over the year. BYD not only emerged ahead in the EV segment but also had a strong performance in hybrid and commercial vehicles. BYD is expected to sell a total of 45.5 lakh vehicles in 2025, including electric buses and trucks.

China’s technological edge

BYD, which started as a battery company in 1995, is today giving tough competition to Tesla in both technology and scale. The company’s advanced driver-assist system ‘God’s Eye’ is now available in its affordable cars too, providing a direct challenge to Tesla’s autonomous driving strategy.
