US President Donald Trump announced that India’s Reliance Industries is cooperating in a huge oil refinery project proposed in Texas. Trump described the project as “historic” for the American energy sector and said it would be a major step towards strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social – “This is a historic deal of $ 300 billion, the largest in American history. This is a big victory for American workers, the energy industry and the people of South Texas.

New refinery to be built in Brownsville

According to Trump, this refinery will be developed by a company called America First Refining at the Brownsville port of Texas (Gulf Coast). He said this would be the first new oil refinery to be built in America in nearly 50 years. According to Trump, this project will play an important role in strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and domestic refining capacity. However, at present, detailed information related to the financial structure or funding of this investment has not been made public.

Thanks to Reliance and India’s partners

In his post, Trump thanked India’s partners by specifically mentioning India’s largest private energy company Reliance Industries. This company is headed by industrialist Mukesh Ambani. He wrote – Thank you to our partners in India and their largest private energy company Reliance for this wonderful investment.

Trump said that due to his “America First” policy, steps like simplifying the permit process and reducing taxes, large-scale investment is coming into the country.

According to him, this refinery to be built in Brownsville:

  • Will provide more fuel to the American market
  • will strengthen national security
  • will increase energy production
  • will create thousands of new jobs

The aim is to make it the cleanest refinery in the world.

Announcement amid Iran tensions and oil price concerns

The announcement comes at a time when there is heightened concern about oil prices due to regional tensions involving Iran and potential disruptions in global supply. The US administration is considering several options to keep the energy market stable. These include releasing oil from strategic petroleum reserves and providing military protection to oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Possibility of connection with earlier Element Fuels project

Energy sector experts believe that this project may be related to the refinery project earlier proposed by Element Fuels. In June 2024, the company said it had completed site preparation and had obtained the necessary permits to build a refinery with a capacity of approximately 1.6 lakh barrels per day. However, no official statement has been issued yet by Reliance Industries and America First Refining regarding this new proposal.

Challenges facing America’s refining sector

According to experts, oil production has increased rapidly in America in the last one and a half decade due to the shale revolution, but the refining capacity has not increased in the same proportion. In such a situation, setting up a new refinery is considered expensive as well as challenging due to complex permit process and environmental opposition.
