Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri spoke openly on ethanol blending in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. During this, he asked people to find shortcomings in his work. Deficiencies will be corrected and correct suggestions will also be incorporated. Along with this, he said that many people were spreading rumors that mixing ethanol in petrol would cause insects and engine failure, but till now this has not happened in any vehicle. He also said that the concept of using ethanol is not new. Work on this has been going on in different countries for a century.

The Petroleum Minister said, “In the last few days, you must have seen many posts on social media regarding biofuel blending. I welcome criticism. If you feel that there is any shortcoming in the work we are doing, please let them know and we will listen to you. We will incorporate your suggestions in our work and make necessary improvements.”

denied the rumors

Hardeep Singh Puri said that we should pay attention to the rumors that were being spread. The first rumor was that using ethanol would kill insects. Another rumor was that using ethanol would cause engine failure or damage or cause the fuel pump to stop working. However, nothing like this has happened. He also made it clear that something like this will not happen in future also.

The concept of ethanol is not new

The Petroleum Minister said that ethanol is being used in different countries for a long time. This may be new for India, but scientists have been working on it for many years and this decision was taken after testing it on a large scale. He said, “We did not create the concept of using ethanol. Work on this has been going on for a century. Henry Ford, the owner of Ford Motor Company, used to run cars using biofuel, kerosene and fossil fuel in his time. As far as India is concerned, the Congress government was the first to make a plan for this. I remember my time as ambassador to Brazil, especially between 2006 and 2008. Sharad Pawar was the Agriculture Minister at that time. We have worked in ten states. And the target was to achieve 5% biofuel in the Union Territories. However, we could not achieve it. We stopped at 1.4%.”

Use of ethanol in racing cars also

Hardeep Singh Puri had said in a press conference in Delhi on Friday, “Someone is saying that the fuel mileage is going to reduce. Now it is well known that ethanol is also used in racing cars. Acceleration is better. Knocking is also better. The mileage may be a little less, but it is less due to many reasons. We have reached this stage after consulting all the stakeholders including SIAM and ARAI. Someone says ‘Your insurance will not cover this’. Who benefits from spreading this lie? But one thing should be clear. There is room for electric vehicles, biofuel blending right now. But if we go from 20 percent to 25 percent, it will happen only after all the necessary tests are completed.
