Ranveer Singh’s film ‘Dhurandhar’ and its sequel ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, along with performing brilliantly at the box office, have also sparked political debate. Now Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has given his reaction after watching both the films. He praised director Aditya Dhar’s filmmaking and the acting of the cast, but raised serious questions over the violence and political messages shown in the film. Tharoor liked the first part, but considered the second part more effective in terms of entertainment. However, he believes that the story could have been presented without such violent scenes. In a nearly seven-minute video shared on his official YouTube channel, he openly expressed his opinion on different aspects of the films.

Called ‘Dhurandhar 2’ a great entertaining film

Praising the film, Shashi Tharoor said that ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ is fantastic as an entertainment and fantasy story. According to him, the second part seemed more impressive than the first. He praised the film’s cinematic presentation and entertainment value, but also clarified that praising a film does not mean agreeing with every part of it. Tharoor expressed his displeasure over the violence shown in the film. He said that the bloodshed, cruelty and disturbing scenes in it have been given more detail than necessary. According to him, it was not necessary to show so many graphic scenes to make the story effective. He called it excessive and beyond limits. This comment of Tharoor has come at a time when different opinions are being seen among the audience regarding the action and violent scenes of the film.

Propaganda in the film and questions on India-Pakistan relations

The Congress MP also discussed the political messages present in the ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise. He admitted that the portrayal of Pakistan in the film and the topics related to relations between the two countries could have an impact on the thinking of the audience. Tharoor said that the film also contains content that looks like propaganda. He also said that according to the information he received, there have been restrictions or objections regarding films in Pakistan and some countries of the Gulf region. In these countries, it was reportedly feared that the film could increase tension between the people of India and Pakistan. However, Tharoor expressed his views in this context and said that he can understand such concerns. He also raised the question that if Pakistani audience watches these films, what will be their reaction. According to Tharoor, the audience may laugh at some of the dialogues in the film, while some incidents may make them think about what has been done in the name of their country.

Mentioned his experience with the functioning of intelligence agencies

The story of the film revolves around an Indian intelligence agent Jaskirat Singh Rangi alias Hamza Ali Mazari, who goes on a secret mission in Pakistan. It depicts intelligence missions, risky operations and behind-the-scenes activities in a dramatic manner. Sharing his experiences, Tharoor said that he has worked with Indian intelligence officers through negotiations and exchange of information. His experience has been limited to analysis, discussion and sharing of information. He said that he had never seen closely the kind of world of secret activities or orders to carry out explosions in far-off capitals, which is shown in the films. According to him, there may be a difference between the world of espionage shown on screen and actual experiences. Therefore, the audience should view the events of the film from the perspective of entertainment and imagination instead of considering them as reality.

Also expressed disagreement on the time limit of R Madhavan’s character.

Shashi Tharoor also raised questions about R Madhavan’s character Ajay Sanyal in the film. This character is believed to be inspired by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Tharoor found it unbelievable that a single officer could hold the same post from the late 1990s to the present day. He said that it would not be correct to consider such a story as a complete portrayal of real events. According to him, it is better to see the film as a fictional story, in which an attempt has been made to convey certain ideas and messages. It is noteworthy that ‘Dhurandhar’ was released in December 2025 and ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ in March 2026. Both the films have reportedly made a worldwide business of more than Rs 3100 crore.
