Famous cinematographer Dilip Ray, who helped in improving the films of Odia cinema for many decades. He died at the age of 72. His family told PTI on Saturday that he died on Friday night at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following an illness he suffered some time back. Of. The film industry and political leaders have expressed grief over the demise of Dilip Ray, a well-known name in the Odia and Bengali film industry. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described his demise as an irreparable loss to the art and culture of the state and said Ray’s contribution in enriching the Odia film industry will always be remembered.

Expressing grief over the death of veteran cinematographer Dilip Ray, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi wrote:

‘His extraordinary artistic contribution in enriching the Odia film industry will always be remembered. His departure is an irreparable loss to the world of our art and culture.

Won 5 Odisha State Film Awards

Born on 27 July 1954 in Cuttack, Dilip Ray took training in cinematography at the Film and Television Institute (FTI), Bengaluru, before beginning his career that spanned several decades. Dilip Ray, who has received the Odisha State Film Award for Best Cinematography five times, has worked in more than 80 Odia feature films, about 15 Bengali films and many Chhattisgarhi films. He also contributed to documentaries and television serials.

Dilip Ray graduated from St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and J.C.C., Calcutta. Earned law degree from College of Law. He also did MBA from Madras. His famous Odia films include ‘Tisandhya’, ‘Baje Banki Naache Ghungura’, ‘Chaka Bhaunri’, ‘E Ta Duniya’, ‘Mamta Ra Dora’, ‘Majhi Pahacha’ and ‘Bidhira Bidhana’.
