Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) will undertake the redevelopment of the northern portion of Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) Terminal 1B. Adani Airport Holdings Limited operates this airport. Due to safety concerns regarding the 60-year-old building, the terminal will be redeveloped in a phased manner.

Mumbai Airport handles 5.5 crore passengers every year

The company said that out of approximately 5.5 crore passengers (mppa) traveling to and from Mumbai Airport (BOM) every year, this will have a temporary impact only on about 5 mppa (about 9%) passengers. In order to continue operations and minimize disruption to passengers, AAHL has given the option to airlines to temporarily shift their operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) as per their wish. AAHL will support the airlines during this period and provide all necessary support to relocate the services smoothly and without any disruption.

Northern part of Terminal 1B will be demolished in the first phase

Arun Bansal, CEO, Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, said, “91% of Mumbai airport’s passenger traffic will not be impacted even though we are redeveloping old infrastructure that needed urgent repairs. To ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers and minimal disruption to operations, only the northern portion of Terminal 1B is being demolished in the first phase, which accounts for about one-third of the capacity of Mumbai airport’s T1. The move to Navi Mumbai airport is temporary and does not imply permanent diversion of Mumbai airport traffic.”

Due to lack of better options, work was being carried out only through temporary measures.

Terminal 1 has long been considered a security concern, but only temporary measures were put in place for so many years because there were no better alternatives for passengers and airlines.

The fire incident took place in April

Following the Terminal 1 fire in April this year, the risks associated with continuing operations have further increased. Now that Navi Mumbai International Airport is operational and can provide an option for airlines and passengers, the plan to close Terminal 1 and redevelop it in a phased manner cannot be postponed any further.

Work will start from January 2027

Redevelopment of T1 will begin in January 2027, increasing its capacity by 33%. That is, it will increase from the current 15 mppa to 20 mppa. Arun Bansal said, “Since 2020, extensive discussions have been going on with the airline companies regarding the future of Terminal 1. The proposed redevelopment plan was also presented to AERA and was later included in the approved tariff framework. However, we understand the concerns of some airline companies, but the safety of passengers is of paramount importance. Any further delay in starting this process could have a negative impact on the safety and convenience of millions of passengers.”

100% discount on landing fees for new international flights at Navi Mumbai Airport

Navi Mumbai Airport is offering 100% discount on landing fees for new international flights. Apart from this, there is also a plan to give cash vouchers to international passengers to compensate for the difference in User Development Fee (UDF) charged at Navi Mumbai and Mumbai airports.

Navi Mumbai International Airport is a modern and world-class airport. It has the necessary infrastructure and capacity to handle the additional passenger flow coming from Mumbai Airport. Arun Bansal said, “The operationalization of Navi Mumbai Airport has made it possible to carry out the redevelopment of T1 of Mumbai Airport in phases, rather than closing the entire terminal and causing further inconvenience to passengers and airlines.”
