India India’s largest airline IndiGo faced a catastrophic operational crisis from the beginning of this month, due to which the company had to cancel thousands of flights. A large number of flights canceled by Indigo had a direct impact not only on the passengers and the airline company but also on the sales of ATF. Due to cancellation of thousands of Indigo flights, there was a decline of more than 4 percent in the sales of ATF (aviation fuel) in the first 15 days of December. This information was received from the initial data of the oil industry on Tuesday.

ATF sales decreased for the first time after Covid

Let us tell you that a large number of aircraft were banned during the Covid pandemic. However, after recovery from the pandemic, the demand for ATF in India was continuously increasing for the last 2 years. However, due to large number of flights being canceled by IndiGo, this trend finally broke in December 2025. The country’s largest airline company Indigo completely failed to follow the new rules made by DGCA, due to which the company had to face a huge shortage of pilots and other crew. Due to acute shortage of staff, Indigo had canceled more than 5000 flights in just 9 days from December 2 to December 10.

7.2% decline in ATF sales on monthly basis

ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) sales stood at 3,31,400 tonnes from December 1-15, compared to 3,45,400 tonnes in the same period last year. Sales declined by 7.2 percent on a monthly basis. During this period, unlike ATF, there was a jump in sales of other major fuels like petrol, diesel and LPG. Diesel sales increased by about 5 percent year-on-year to 33 lakh tonnes. Compared to October, diesel sales declined by 5.5% on a monthly basis in November due to lower festive demand. On the other hand, petrol sales also increased by 7.7 percent on annual basis to 13.3 lakh tonnes. Whereas, on monthly basis it registered a decline of 5.1 percent.
