income The tax department on Tuesday said that so far more than 15 lakh taxpayers have filed updated income tax returns (ITR) for the current assessment year 2025-26. The department had recently launched a campaign ‘NUDGE’, under which it is advising those taxpayers who have wrongly claimed deductions related to unrecognized political parties or certain charitable institutions through email and SMS. The Income Tax Department said in the statement that in the current financial year, more than 21 lakh taxpayers have paid a total tax of Rs 2500 crore by making corrections in their ITR.
31st December is the last date to file updated ITR
The department has appealed to taxpayers to check their ITRs, re-check deduction and exemption claims and file updated returns, if necessary, by December 31, 2025, to avoid further scrutiny. However, the department has clarified that if a taxpayer is claiming correct deduction or exemption as per the law, then there is no need to take any further action. Taxpayers will have to file an updated ITR after December 31 to make changes in the return for assessment year 2025-26.
Major fraud was revealed in the investigation
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had said in early December that data analysis had revealed that many taxpayers had made fraudulent claims of deductions and refunds by showing donations to unrecognized political parties and some charitable institutions. According to the Board, many of these unrecognized political parties do not file returns and are not active at their registration addresses. He is not even involved in political activities. CBDT said these institutions were often used for money laundering, hawala transactions, remittances from abroad and issuing fake receipts.
