Prime Minister The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the creation of 4-lane access-controlled greenfield connectivity on 715 sections from Gohpur to Numaligarh on NH-15. It also includes a 15.79 km road cum rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra river. It will be built in Assam on Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) at a total cost of Rs 18,662 crore. Currently, there is a distance of 240 km between Numaligarh located on NH-715 and Gohpur located on NH-15. The journey takes 6 hours passing through Numaligarh, Kaziranga National Park and Biswanath Town.
Road cum rail tunnel will be built under Brahmaputra river
To address these challenges, the project is proposed to be developed as a 4-lane access-controlled greenfield connectivity from Gohpur to Numaligarh on NH-15 with a twin tube road cum rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra river. This will be the first underwater road cum rail tunnel in India and the second in the world. This project will greatly benefit Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and other North-East states. This will increase the efficiency of freight transportation, reduce logistics costs and promote socio-economic growth in the area.
Along with 2 major national highways, 2 major railway lines will also meet.
This project will connect two major national highways NH-15 and NH-715 as well as two railway lines. The project will interconnect the Rangia-Mukongselek rail section on Gohpur side under Rangia division of NFR and the Furkating-Mariani loop line section on Numaligarh side under Tinsukia division of NFR. This project will provide excellent connectivity to key economic, social and logistics nodes across Assam. Additionally, the project will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting 11 economic nodes, 3 social nodes, 2 tourist nodes and 8 logistics nodes, providing better connectivity with 4 major railway stations, 2 airports and 2 inland water-ways, allowing faster movement of goods and passengers across the region.
