New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is considering completely stopping cash transactions at toll plazas on National Highways. According to the release issued by the ministry, “With the objective of making the National Highway Toll System completely digital, NHAI may completely stop cash transactions at National Highway Toll Plazas across the country from April 1, 2026. This is being considered. After this implementation, all toll payments at National Highway Toll Plazas will be made only through digital means using Fastag or UPI.”
traffic will be easier
“It aims to consolidate the progress achieved in electronic toll collection and enhance the efficiency and reliability of National Highway toll plaza operations. This change will help in ‘ease of travel’ for National Highway users by reducing congestion at toll plazas by improving lane efficiency and bringing greater consistency and transparency in toll transactions,” the release said.
Convenience available through digital payment
According to the information, more than 98 percent usage of Fastag in the last few years has brought about a significant change in the methods of toll collection in the country. Currently, a large portion of toll transactions are processed electronically through RFID-enabled FASTags fitted in vehicles, enabling seamless and contactless movement at toll plazas. Additionally, UPI payment facility has also been launched at National Highway Toll Plazas, providing quick and accessible digital payment options to National Highway commuters across the country.
Disputes increase in cash payments
Assessments conducted at the plaza level show that cash payments increase congestion, increase waiting times during peak traffic hours and lead to transaction disputes. The complete transition to a digital-only payment system will increase operational efficiency, improve traffic management, reduce delays and improve the overall experience of National Highway users at over 1,150 toll plazas located on various National Highways and Expressways across the country.
