central Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Britain is likely to come into effect from mid-April this year. India and Britain signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 24 last year. Under this, there will be no tariff on 99 percent of India’s exports in the British market, while the tariffs applicable in India on some British products like cars and whiskey will be reduced. Before implementing this agreement, it is necessary to obtain the approval of the British Parliament. Whereas in India, the Union Cabinet approves such agreements.
FTA will be implemented after getting approval from British Parliament
After getting approval from the British Parliament, it will be implemented on a mutually agreed date. Piyush Goyal said that this FTA will be the fastest agreement to be approved in the British Parliament. He said in an event organized by ASSOCHAM that normally such an agreement takes one and a half years to be implemented. But this agreement was signed in July 2025 and will be implemented in the next one month.
Claims that talks have stopped on India-US trade agreement refuted
On the other hand, Piyush Goyal rejected the claim that talks have stopped regarding trade agreement between India and America. He said that these claims have no basis. Goyal said, “We have a very good trade agreement with America. We have been successful in protecting all our sensitive areas.” The Commerce Ministry said on Friday that negotiations are going on for a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement between India and the US.
The meeting was postponed after the decision of the US Supreme Court
Let us tell you that the chief negotiators of the two countries were to meet in Washington last month to finalize the legal draft of the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement. But this meeting was postponed after the US Supreme Court canceled the retaliatory tariffs of the US administration. The ministry said this while rejecting reports claiming that bilateral talks on trade agreement have stalled.
