Delhi A major infrastructural upgradation work is going to start at Indira Gandhi International Airport, due to this work, one runway of the airport will remain closed for about 5 months from February 16. Announcing this, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that re-surfacing of Runway 11R/29L is to be done along with its technical upgrade. DIAL said that this work is part of a significant and long-term plan to improve safety and operational efficiency. However, despite the closure of one runway of Delhi airport, flight operations will continue normally without any major disruption.
Delhi airport runway will remain closed till July this year
The third runway of Delhi Airport, which started in 2008, will open once again in July this year after all the work related to upgradation is completed and after getting the approval of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). DIAL said the decision has been taken after assessing the current condition of the runway after almost 17 years of continuous use.
What work needs to be done on the runway
- Runway resurfacing
- Construction of a new rapid exit taxiway
- Installation of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS)
There will be no change in air traffic movement
These upgrades are intended to improve security, increase operational flexibility and prepare the airport for future growth. DIAL clarified that the daily air traffic movement of the airport during the period of one runway closure will remain at 1514 flights and there will be no change. Airline companies and Air Traffic Control (ATC) have already been informed about the upgradation and operational plans have been made to ensure smooth operations. According to airport operator DIAL, detailed discussions and planning have been done with all stakeholders including the Airport Authority of India (AAI), DGCA and airline operators to minimize any inconvenience to passengers.
