
Indian Railways is planning to start work in full swing on the plan to install the Kavach system on the country’s most important rail route Mumbai-Delhi-Howrah. According to the new plan of Railways, the work of armor system on Mumbai-Delhi-Howrah route will be completed in 2026. Let us tell you that the work on this route was to be completed in December 2025 and this was the second time when the Railways missed completing the armor system installation on this route. Let us tell you that Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. This helps the loco pilots to run the train within the prescribed speed limit and if the speed exceeds then this system automatically stops the train by reducing its speed.
25% work completed on Mumbai-Delhi-Howrah route
According to officials, 25 percent work on these routes has been completed and they are ready for use. Major components have already been installed on the remaining 75 percent of the route. He said, “We are trying our best to commission the Kavach system on Mumbai-Delhi and Delhi-Howrah routes. It is expected that this will be achieved by 2026. The Railway Ministry had said on August 7, 2024 that the armor work on this route will be completed by March 2025. It had announced the extension of the deadline from March to December 2025 in the budget document titled ‘Railway Estimates for Revised Estimates 2024-25 and Budget Estimates 2025-26’ on February 1, 2025.
Field test of armor started in February 2016
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had given information on Kavach in the Lok Sabha on 17 December. Vaishnav had said, “After detailed and extensive trials, Kavach has been successfully commissioned on Palwal-Mathura-Nagda section (633 km) on Delhi-Mumbai route and Howrah-Bardhaman section (105 km) on Delhi-Howrah route. The work of implementing the Kavach project in the remaining parts of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridor has been started. Let us tell you that the first field test of Kavach in trains started in February 2016 and it was adopted as the national ATP system in July 2020.
