The prices of premium petrol have been increased across the country. New prices have come into effect from March 20, 2026, due to which premium fuel from various oil companies has become expensive. The prices of ‘Speed’ of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), ‘Power’ of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and ‘XP95’ of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) petrol have been increased by Rs 2.09 to Rs 2.35 per liter. After the price increase, the price of one liter premium petrol in Delhi has now become Rs 113.77.

No change in the price of regular petrol

However, it is a matter of relief for the common consumers that at present there has been no change in the prices of ordinary petrol (regular petrol). This increase in the prices of premium petrol by the companies has been done at a time when the prices of crude oil are fluctuating in the international market. This may have further impact on fuel prices in the future.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery) in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India has said that the prices of petrol and diesel have been deregulated. The prices of petrol and diesel have not increased yet. Only the price of premium petrol has increased. Sharma said that premium petrol is hardly 2-4 percent of the total petrol.

Industrial diesel also very expensive

After the latest decision of the companies, the prices of industrial diesel have increased by Rs 22.02 per liter.

What is premium petrol?

Premium petrol is a higher quality fuel than normal petrol. It has a high octane rating, due to which it is considered especially suitable for vehicles with modern and high-performance engines. The octane rating of premium petrol in India usually ranges from 91 to 93, although it can be higher in some brands. The biggest advantage of a higher octane rating is that it reduces ‘knocking’ in the engine, making the vehicle’s performance smoother and better. Special types of additives (chemicals) are added to premium petrol, which help in cleaning the engine. This increases the efficiency of the engine and also increases its lifespan.
