
China Leaving behind India has now become the world’s largest rice producer. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan gave this information on Sunday. Releasing 184 new varieties of 25 crops today, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that India has become the world’s largest rice producer by overtaking China with a total production of 151.8 million tonnes. The minister said that these new high-yield seed varieties will boost crop production and increase the income of farmers. He directed the ministry officials to ensure that these new varieties reach the farmers quickly.
Big success in development of high yielding seeds
According to an official statement, the minister unveiled 184 improved varieties of 25 regional crops developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at an event held in the national capital. Addressing the program, Chauhan said that the country has achieved great success in the development of high yielding seeds. A total of 7205 crop varieties have been notified since the Gazette notification process began in 1969, which includes rice, wheat, sorghum, maize, pulses, oilseeds, fiber crops. Shivraj Chauhan said that 3236 high-yielding varieties have been approved by the Narendra Modi-led government, while 3969 varieties were notified between 1969 and 2014.
India’s rice production reached 151.8 million tons compared to China’s 145 million tons.
The Agriculture Minister said that India has transformed from a food deficient country to a global food provider. “India has overtaken China in rice production and has become the world’s largest producer,” he said. Describing it as an unprecedented achievement, he said that India’s rice production has reached 151.8 million tonnes compared to China’s 145 million tonnes. He said that India is now supplying rice to foreign markets. He said that the country has abundant food grains reserves, which ensures India’s food security.
