
India And Canada has strengthened mutual cooperation in the Agri-Food Sector more than ever. For this, a 5-year MoU was signed between the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management-Kundali (NIFTEM-K) and the University of Saskatchewan (USask). According to a government statement, the agreement was signed by NIFTEM-K Director Harinder Singh Oberoi and USask Vice President (Research) Baljit Singh in the presence of Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moye and senior officials from India’s Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
What will be the benefits of this agreement between India and Canada?
This partnership follows the announcement by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney of a jointly supported Center of Excellence in Pulse Protein, which will be led by NIFTEM-K and U-Sask. The MoU includes joint research projects, online teaching and training programmes, teacher and student exchanges, integrated degree programs in food processing technology and industry-oriented short-term courses. It also includes funding proposals, seminars and workshops aimed at advancing innovation, sustainable food systems, food security and value chain development.
Expected to boost research-driven industrial development
Officials said this collaboration is expected to promote research-driven industrial development and further strengthen India-Canada cooperation in the agri-food sector. Also, NIFTEM-K’s global engagement in food technology and entrepreneurship will increase. The objective of this MoU between National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management-Kundali and University of Saskatchewan is to develop innovative online teaching and training programs based on food science and technology as well as food system economics and business development.
Additionally, the agreement will facilitate short-term exchange initiatives for faculty, researchers and students, thereby promoting international collaboration and sharing of best practices in food processing.
