Kolkata Metro on Thursday announced that more trains will be run on the Purple Line, with services starting from 6:40 am to 9:26 pm. Now 84 services will be operated on this line on weekdays, whereas earlier this number was 80. According to PTI news, this change will benefit the passengers using local train service from Majerhat station of Eastern Railway.
Trains will increase from December 1, note the time
- First train: departs from Joka at 6:40 am and Majherhat at 7:03 am.
- Last train: departs from Joka at 9:05 and Majerhat at 9:26.

Services on the Purple Line have been started from Saturday, November 22, on a distance of 7.75 km. Trains will not run on this line on Sunday. The line is being expanded and will connect Jokka to Esplanade, where it will connect with the Blue and Green lines in the heart of the city. Connectivity has been greatly boosted by the expansion of Kolkata’s metro network. Demand for houses has increased and office leasing activity has also increased.
Kolkata Metro: India’s first metro and its journey
According to the official website, Kolkata Metro, India’s first metro system, serves the people by carrying about five lakh passengers every day. The journey from the beginning of work on its planning to its operation was almost two decades long. The Metropolitan Transport Project started in 1969. The master plan prepared in 1971 proposed a total network of 97.50 km comprising three north-south corridors.
Three corridors were selected for detailed planning:
- Dumdum – Tollygunge
- Bidhannagar – Ramrajtala
- Dakshineswar – Thakurpukur
India’s first metro line
Based on traffic study the Dumdum – Tollygunge corridor was selected for implementation first. Its construction work started on 29 December 1972. On 24 October 1984, the first section of approximately 3.4 km length between Esplanade and Bhawanipur was completed, becoming India’s first metro line. Subsequently, construction of other parts of the corridor was gradually completed and some extensions were also made.
By the end of 2010, this corridor was extended to New Garia, allowing the people of Kolkata to take full advantage of modern metro service. Today the Kolkata Metro not only ensures fast and convenient travel in the city, but is also considered a significant achievement in the history of urban transport in India.
