You will be surprised to know that in the last month i.e. December 2025, a total of 6,890 flights were canceled across the country. Due to this, 9,66,864 passengers were affected. IndiGo had the highest number of canceled flights, which accounted for 82 percent of the total canceled flights. This information has been revealed in official figures. IndiGo faced serious operational problems in early December. After this the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reduced the airline’s winter schedule by 10%. DGCA also imposed a total fine of Rs 22.20 crore on the airline and took other regulatory action.
What were the main reasons
Minister of State (Civil Aviation) Muralidhar Mohal said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that the main reasons for this problem were:
- Hyper-Optimization of Operations
- Lack of regulatory preparedness
- Flaws in system software support
- Deficiencies in IndiGo’s management and operational controls
Apart from this, the minister said that due to bad weather in December, other airlines also canceled many flights.
Canceled flights and affected passengers
According to the airlines, the number of canceled flights and affected passengers was as follows:
- IndiGo: 5,689 flights cancelled, 9,02,384 passengers affected
- Air India Group: 924 flights cancelled, 43,278 passengers affected
- SpiceJet: 79 flights cancelled, 11,929 passengers affected
- Akasa Air: 39 flights cancelled, 5,673 passengers affected
- Alliance Air (government): 63 flights cancelled, 2,463 passengers affected
- IndiaOne Air: 71 flights cancelled, 408 passengers affected
- Star Air: 17 flights cancelled, 386 passengers affected
- Fly91: 8 flights cancelled, 343 passengers affected
DGCA data shows that the country’s air service witnessed large-scale disruptions and operational challenges in December.
