Amid fuel supply concerns arising from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the Center has directed states and Union Territories (UTs) to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing of petroleum products and LPG. According to PTI news, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, while giving a solution to the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act and LPG Control Order in this context, said that the states should increase surveillance, do daily monitoring and inspection in collaboration with oil marketing companies and keep a close watch on mis-distribution of fuel and rumors.
Avoid panic buying and rumors
According to the report, states have also been directed to hold daily press briefings, set up control rooms and helplines and actively counter fake news to reassure the public about fuel availability. The government has appealed to the citizens to avoid “panic buying” of petrol and diesel and unnecessary LPG booking and not to rely on rumours. Also, citizens have been advised to use digital means for LPG booking and go to the distribution center only when necessary.
Appeal to try to reduce daily energy consumption
The government said that wherever possible, people should use alternative fuels such as PNG, induction and electric cooktops and try to reduce daily energy consumption. The Center also clarified that despite the “war situation”, essential services like domestic LPG and piped natural gas, as well as hospitals and educational institutions have been given top priority. Refinery production has been increased, LPG booking interval has been increased to 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas.

Moreover, alternative fuels like kerosene and coal are being used to reduce LPG demand, and excess coal has been sent to the state coal. Instructions have also been given to the states to increase PNG connections and ensure targeted LPG distribution. So far, more than 4,000 LPG cylinders have been seized across states and union territories, in which more than 1,300 LPG cylinders have been seized. Public sector oil marketing companies have issued show cause notices to more than 670 LPG distributors. Regular press briefings are currently being held in 21 states and union territories to keep the public updated about fuel availability and supply status.
