Indian Railways has taken a big step towards strengthening the security on the country’s borders. Now traveling in reserve trains running in the international border areas adjacent to Bangladesh and Nepal will not be as easy as before. The Railway Ministry has made identity card (ID) verification mandatory in these areas. This decision will have a direct impact on those passengers who try to travel on reserved tickets without valid identification.
What is the new order of Railways?
The Railway Board has issued a letter to all the zonal railways on 4 February 2026 and given clear instructions. According to this, it will be mandatory for at least one passenger to show the original identity card while traveling in reserve class. If this is not done, the entire group will be treated as traveling without ticket and action will be taken as per rules.
In which areas will strictness be implemented?
Railway Board has clearly stated in the circular issued on 6 February 2026 that these instructions should be strictly followed especially in the international border areas. This includes railway routes connected to the India-Nepal and India-Bangladesh borders. Railways believes that this will prevent illegal travel, fake tickets and security related apprehensions.
Keep an eye on concession and quota tickets also
Railways has also directed that passengers who are availing the benefit of concession or booking tickets under special quota (like senior citizens, students etc.) will also have to produce a valid document proving their eligibility. In case of failure to prove identity or eligibility, action may be taken.
Which IDs are valid during travel?
Railways has already decided the list of valid identity cards for the passengers. While traveling on a reserved ticket, passengers can carry one of the following original identity cards:
- voter photo identity card
- Passport
- PAN card
- driving license
- Photo ID issued by Central or State Government
- Student ID card of recognized school/college
- Passbook with photo of nationalized bank
- Aadhar card
What precautions should travelers take?
After this new rule of Railways, passengers are being advised to carry their original ID with them before travelling. This has become very important especially for those traveling in border areas, because not having ID during the check can lead to fine, cancellation of ticket or legal action.
