Now the national highways of the country will be known not only for the high speed of vehicles but also for new initiatives to save the environment. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to build ‘B Corridor’ for the first time. Under this, such trees and plants will be planted along the highway, which are beneficial for bees and other pollinating creatures. This will improve the balance of nature and strengthen the environment.
Till now, trees were planted mostly for decoration along the highways. But in the ‘B Corridor’ scheme, such trees and plants will be planted which bloom at different times throughout the year. With this, the bees will continue to get nectar and pollen throughout the year. This will improve the number and health of bees, which are very important for farming and production of fruits and vegetables.
Which trees will be planted?
In this scheme, native trees like Neem, Karanj, Mahua, Palash, Bottle Brush, Jamun and Siris will be planted. Along with these, bushes, herbs and grass will also be grown. Dry wood and hollow tree trunks will also not be removed, so that bees and other pollinating creatures can get a place to live. Trees and plants will be selected in such a way that some flowers bloom in every season and greenery remains throughout the year.
Green clusters every 500 meters to 1 km
Field offices of NHAI will identify such highway sections across the country where clusters of flowering trees can be developed at an interval of approximately 500 meters to 1 kilometer. This distance will be kept in line with the average foraging range of bees. NHAI is planning to plant around 40 lakh trees in the financial year 2026-27, of which around 60 percent will be under the ‘B Corridor’. Each field office has been given a target to develop at least three such corridors.
Environment and agriculture will benefit
This initiative will increase the number of different types of plants and animals in nature and will help insects like bees to collect pollen from flowers. Experts say that this will lead to better pollination of crops and can also increase agricultural production.
