Indian Railways is progressing rapidly by becoming the axis of infrastructure development of the country. Not only a means of transportation, but it has also become the basis of economic development, industrial supply chain and energy logistics. Railways has set a new record in infrastructure development. According to the latest Economic Survey, India’s railway network has expanded to 69,439 kilometers by March 2025 and a target has been set to increase it by 3500 kilometers in the financial year 2026. This expansion is not only increasing connectivity, but is also giving new energy to the country’s economic growth.
History created in electrification
The biggest achievement of Railways has been seen in its electrification campaign. By October 2025, 99.1 percent of the country’s total rail network has been electrified. This simply means that now almost the entire railway network is close to being diesel free, which will not only reduce pollution but will also result in huge savings in the fuel expenses of the Railways.
Double the speed of network expansion
Since 2014, there has been a tremendous jump in the pace of expansion of the railway network. According to the data, the rate of commissioning of railway lines has more than doubled (average 3118 km per year) during 2014-24 compared to the decade of 2004-14 (average 1499 km per year).

Mega plan for financial year 2026 (FY26)
Railways is not going to stop here. For the financial year 2026, the government has set an ambitious target of adding 3,500 kilometers of new lines. For this, provision for historically high capital expenditure has been made in the budget. This outlay for financial year 2026 (BE) has been fixed at Rs 2.65 lakh crore.
Modern features and security
A major part of the huge investment is being spent on new lines, doubling of railway tracks, modernizing signaling systems and security related works. Railways have now also become the backbone of freight movement, rapidly moving coal, industrial logistics and container traffic through ‘dedicated freight corridors’. With the redevelopment of stations and the advent of digital systems, the passenger experience is going to be better and safer than ever before.
