central Cooperation Minister Amit Shah told Parliament on Tuesday that the government is planning to launch ‘Bharat Taxi’ mobile app, which aims to free the country’s commercial vehicle drivers from dependence on private companies. The digital app, ‘Bharat Taxi’, will be operated by ‘Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited’, a multi-state cooperative society registered under the MSCS Act 2002, on June 6, 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. “The government has proposed to launch a cooperative-led digital app mobility platform that will help free the country’s commercial vehicle drivers from dependence on private companies,” he said.
Both driver and passenger will benefit
Key features of the Bharat Taxi app include mobile phone booking for user-friendly journeys, transparent fares, location tracking, multilingual ‘interface’ and 24×7 customer services to enhance accessibility, secure and verified journeys, inclusive mobility, tech-enabled assistance and security measures for citizens. With the ‘zero commission model’, cab drivers will get full earnings from each ride. The profit of the cooperative society will be distributed directly among the drivers. He said the transparent pricing model would be beneficial for both drivers and passengers.
Bharat Taxi pilot project will start from Delhi
With the arrival of this new platform, private cab service providing companies are likely to face tough competition. Its most important thing is that in this the drivers will not have to pay any commission and all the money received from the passengers will come directly into their account. The pilot project of Bharat-Taxi will start from the capital Delhi in November. About 650 drivers and their vehicles will be involved in this. It will be gradually implemented in other cities across the country from December and it is estimated that around 5000 drivers will join this service during this period.
