The upcoming Union Budget 2026-27 of the Government of India may once again prove to be important for the railway sector. Indian Railways has received consistently higher allocations over the past few years, and this time too capital expenditure is expected to remain stable or marginally increase. Experts estimate that the total provision for Railways could reach ₹2.65 lakh crore to ₹2.8 lakh crore, representing an increase of 8% from the previous budget (about ₹2.65 lakh crore in 2025-26). This focus will be in line with the vision of a developed India in the year 2047, where the emphasis will be on security, modernisation, capacity expansion and passenger amenities.

Main expectations and possible announcements

Detail of Armor System: There is a possibility of huge funding to implement the indigenous anti-collision system Kavach (Kavach 4.0–5.0) on a large scale. It will be rolled out rapidly on busy routes while giving top priority to safety, so that accidents can be minimized.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: There is strong expectation of introducing 20 new Vande Bharat sleeper trains to revolutionize long distance travel. There will be faster production and rollout of a 24-coach advanced version (with AC pantry, more berths, fire safety, CCTV and Kavach integration), which can replace trains like Rajdhani Express.

AI and Smart Operations: The focus will be on upgradation of stations, use of AI in signaling system, smart monitoring and increasing operational efficiency. This will improve the speed, punctuality and capacity of trains.

Restoration of senior citizen exemption: After Covid, there is a strong demand to restore the senior citizen concession (40-50% in Mail/Express) suspended since 2020. Its announcement in the budget may provide relief to lakhs of elderly passengers.

Emphasis on Hydrogen Train: Policy support and funding are expected to take pilot projects of green hydrogen-based trains to commercial scale. This will be a big step towards making Railways environment-friendly.

Overall, the continuation of capital expenditure will give impetus to projects like Vande Bharat, Kavach and Green Technology, thereby further strengthening Indian Railways at the global level. Will the budget live up to these expectations? Everything will become clear with the presentation of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 1st February.
