
Indian Railways has given a big update regarding train ticket cancellation in the new year. In a recently issued circular, Railways has amended the rules for the amount to be deducted on cancellation of train tickets. New Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat Express trains have also been included in this. According to the notification issued on January 16, the short name of the new rules is Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fare) Amendment Rules, 2026.
Rules related to ticket cancellation of Vande Bharat Sleeper
According to the new rule effective from January 16, if the ticket is canceled more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train, 25 percent amount will be deducted as cancellation charge.
If the ticket is canceled within a period of 72 hours to 8 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, 50 percent of the amount will be deducted as cancellation charge.
No fare refund will be given if the ticket is canceled less than 8 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

However, in case of Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, if the ticket is not canceled or TDR is not filed online till 8 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, no refund of fare will be given on such tickets. The reserved ticket of Amrit Bharat II Express will be governed by the rules applicable to the reserved ticket of Vande Bharat Sleeper Express.

Ticket cancellation time for Vande Bharat Sleeper Express and Amrit Bharat II Express has been increased to 72 hours, while for other trains it is 48 hours. However, on unreserved tickets of Amrit Bharat II Express, the existing rules applicable to unreserved tickets will continue to apply.
Railways has recently revised the base fare for major train services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Antyodaya, Gatimaan, Yuva Express, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and general non-suburban services.
