Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has invited TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee for a meeting on June 19 to present his stand on the issue of division in the party. Trinamool Congress sources said that the party received an email in this regard from the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office at 5:00 pm on Wednesday.
Abhishek Banerjee will meet Birla on Friday evening. This development has come to light at a time when 20 rebel Trinamool MPs have demanded recognition of themselves as a separate group after merging with the ‘Nationalist Citizens Party of India’ (NCPI). Speaker Om Birla has decided to listen to both the sides before taking any decision in this matter.
Abhishek Banerjee had written a letter
Abhishek Banerjee had written a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 10 requesting that no recognition, status or facility be provided to any group claiming to be a separate faction within the Trinamool Congress. Banerjee had said in the letter that the Constitution and anti-defection laws do not allow the formation of a separate group within an existing political party. Party MPs Kirti Azad and Sagarika Ghosh also visited Birla’s residence on Sunday and handed over this letter to him.
“Party is supreme, not faction”
Banerjee had said in her letter, “Trinamool Congress should be treated as the only political party represented in the House through its duly authorized leader and Chief Whip and any so-called separate group or faction should be denied any recognition, status or facility.”
Citing the decision of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court related to the political crisis in Maharashtra, he had argued that there is no longer any defense of ‘partition’ under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution and the existing legal system recognizes an entire political party and not rival factions within it. He had also said, “If any such request is received, the Trinamool Congress should be given an opportunity to present its stand before any decision is taken on it.” Parliamentary sources said that Birla will take a decision in this matter in accordance with the law, rules and procedures.
