Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday took stock of the progress of the construction work of the ambitious Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Surat, Gujarat. He reiterated that all efforts are being made to complete this 1,350 km long project as soon as possible. According to PTI news, after the opening of this expressway, the travel time between the country’s capital Delhi and the financial capital Mumbai will reduce from the present around 24 hours to just 12 hours.
The project will be completed soon after removing all the obstacles.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the under-construction section in Surat, Gadkari said that the construction of the road is of high quality and all minor defects are being removed using state-of-the-art technology. We are trying to complete the project as soon as possible by removing all the hurdles. The quality of this eight-lane expressway is being rigorously tested so that passengers can have a safe, comfortable and convenient journey. He also said that keeping in mind the environment, greenery will be increased by planting trees on a large scale on both sides of the road.
Electric highways and low logistics costs
Nitin Gadkari shared a visionary dream for this expressway, which can make it a gamechanger for the country’s economy. He said that in future my dream is that electric trucks and buses will run on this road. We are incorporating the world’s best technology into it, with the main aim of reducing logistics costs. He expressed confidence that once this road is ready, it will give an unprecedented boost to exports, tourism and travel of common people.
Connectivity to UP and Rajasthan
The expressway, whose foundation stone was laid in 2019, will also be connected to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to create a comprehensive network, facilitating direct connectivity to Delhi and Mumbai from these states. Emphasizing the importance of the project, Gadkari said that it is an important road in the history of the country. Very few highways in the world have such length and width. With the help of engineers, contractors and the state government, we have almost reached the final stage.
After inspecting Surat, the minister also took stock of the progress of expressway construction in Navsari and Valsad districts of southern Gujarat. This corridor will prove to be an important economic corridor for the country, connecting the major economic centers of Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
