America Two US MPs have urged President Donald Trump to insist on favorable provisions for pulses in any future trade agreement with India. Lawmakers say US producers are suffering a “huge competitive disadvantage” due to the “unfair” tariffs imposed by New Delhi. In a letter to President Trump on January 16, Republican lawmakers Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said their states are two major producers of pulses, including peas.
India is the largest consumer of pulses
The MPs said in their letter that India is the largest consumer of pulses in the world, with about 27 percent share in global consumption. Lentils, chickpeas, dry beans and peas are the most consumed crops in India, but New Delhi has imposed heavy tariffs on US exports in these categories, the lawmakers said. He said that India had announced 30 percent duty on yellow peas on October 30 last year, which came into effect from November 1, 2025.
Appeal to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of duty on pulses
“Due to these unfair Indian tariffs, US producers are suffering significant losses in exporting their high-quality products to India,” the letter said. Danes and Cramer said it would be “mutually beneficial” for both US producers and Indian consumers to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of tariffs on pulses to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
America has imposed 50 percent tariff on India
